Thomas (Tom) was born at Headcorn, Kent, in 1829 and christened there on 30th August, the son of William Freeman and his wife Rachel (previously Excell, originally Pyle). Was he, perhaps, named after his uncle Thomas Freeman who had emigrated three years previously? In 1841 he was living at Love Farm, Headcorn, aged 12, with his parents, though his father William was wrongly named as Richard. (William's brother Richard was, in fact, living with his family in another part of Headcorn.) Tom, a farm worker, married Emmeline Brazier at Tilden Chapel, Smarden, in 1849 and they spent almost all their married life at various addresses in Smarden.
