Wilfred was born in July 1898, son of William Thomas Freeman and his wife Lily Emma, nee Bacon.

Note: Their marriage certificate contains the following inaccuracies:- 1. The age of Gladys Evelyn Quayle is given as 37 rather than 42. 2. Gladys Evelyn Quayle is described as a spinster. 3. Her father's name is given as "James Edward Platt, Bank Clerk". In other words, Gladys knocked five years off her age, and wrongly stated that her first husband was her father. She was, however, a lively, amusing, and loveable being whose escape from her first marriage was a sensible act. Charles proved to be an excellent husband, much respected in the community.
