Biography

Myrtle was born in 1865 in Milton, Nova Scotia to parents Ira Freeman and Mary (Harlow) Freeman, the first born of 6 children. [1]

There is conflicting information about the year of her birth. We record 1865 as supported by the majority of sources.

  • November 24, 1865 according to [1] and [2]
  • November 24, 1863 according to her Death Certificate [3]
  • 1867 according to her Marriage Record - recorded as age 28 in May 1896 [4]
  • 1865 according to Census 1871 [5]
  • 1865 according to Census 1881 [6]

She was living in Milton when on 28 May 1896 in Port Medway, Nova Scotia she married Horace Cole, age 31 also from Milton. [4]

  • First marriage for both of them.
  • Her father was recorded as being Horace P. (merchant), but this must be a clerical mistake - her father was Ira P. Freeman)
  • Witnesses were Edna M. Ford and Bertha M. Cole (Horace's sister)
  • Her age was listed as 28, but may be incorrect as that would make her birth year 1867
  • Horace Cole's age was listed as 31, which agrees with his birth year 1865

Myrtle & Horace had 3 children, all born in Milton:

  • Angus McLeod Cole, born May 19, 1898
  • Thelma Pauline Cole, born April 14, 1900
  • Mary Isabel Cole, born April 26, 1904 [1]

Myrtle died on 23 Sept 1936 aged 72 years 9 months. [3] The death certificate shows

  • Age is 72y 9m 24d, a widow, born 11-24-1863 - error? Different from other sources - eg gravestone shows 1865)
  • Husband was Horace Cole
  • Parents are Ira Freeman and Mary Rebecca Harlow
  • Informant is Angus Cole of Milton, son

Buried in the Milton Community Cemetery [2]

Myrtle is my great grandmother. I have names and dates about her siblings and her children, one of whom is my maternal grandmother. How best to add this?
