Research Notes

This is one of several options, but perhaps the strongest, for John Freeman's (b. 1796) father.

Here are some notes I made: John Freeman of Wilkinson County and link to Norfolk Freemans

  • I have to believe that the John Freeman who was a neighbor of Roger Cauley in Lenoir County, NC c 1750 - 1790 was related to the John Freeman who emigrated to Screven County.
  • One hint to pursue is an Elisha Freeman, who was of the lineage of John Freeman: (from http://www.oocities.org/warreningriffin/freeman1.htm) but had residence in Onslow County. Onslow County is quite close to Dobbs/Lenoir, which is where an Elisha Freeman is in residence with a John Freeman and a Roger Cauley in 1780 and the 1790's. I have 2 sources for an Elisha Freeman which might make him the link between the Norfolk/Bertie/Gates County Freemans and the Dobbs/Johnston/Lenoir County Freemans.

Elisha Freeman born about 1749, married Elizabeth, died about 1793. His children:

  1. Isaac Freeman
  2. Hannah Freeman marriage bond Jan. 24, 1802 William Henderson.
  3. Nancy Freeman marriage bond Jan. 24, 1797 Matthew Wise.
  4. Ferribar Freeman
  5. James Freeman
  6. Mark Freeman
  7. John Freeman married Susannah, died 1857.
  8. Betty Freeman

And from Sally's Family Place: Children of Francis Speight and Kathern Grimes:

  1. Anna Speight 1727 - ca 1777

married ca 1740/41 John Freeman 1711/21 - 1785

    • David Freeman ca 1742 - ca 1765
    • . Elizabeth Freeman married James Baker
    • Solomon Freeman ca 1743 - 1788 Bertie Co
married Elizabeth Speight
married 2nd Martha Cherry
    • . Elisha Freeman ca 1749 - 1793 Onslow Co NC
married Elizabeth 8 children
    • John Freeman ca 1751 - aft 1783
    • . Moses Freeman ca 1754 - aft 1800
married Mary at least 2 ch
    • . Aaron Freeman 30 Jan 1758 Bertie Co - 26 Nov 1821 Livingston Co KY
married 9 Sept 1777 Judith Fleetwood 13 children

I will accept this to be the link until I can do better.
