Biography

James was born in 1794. His father was Jacob Freeman. He married Hannah Oliver in Laurens County, Georgia, in 1819.[1]

James sold land in 1820 to William W. Oliver, he having inherited said land from his marriage to Hanna Oliver, who drew said lot of land at the division of John Oliver Estate, her father. "... 'that portion she received as her part of the division of the estate of John Oliver, her father. January 17, 1820"

After selling that land James moved to Wilkinson County, Georgia.[2] He stayed there for a few years, before making the move to Decatur County, Georgia in the mid- 1820's.He moved there with two brothers and a sister and their families.[3]

James and his sister-in-law Orpha Freeman were administrators of his brother Thomas' estate in 1839.[4]

James served dutifully until 1845 when his brother Thomas' estate was completed and his service dismissed.[5]

James owned 165 acres right on the Flint River. He died at the age of 52. His wife served as administrator of his estate and notice was published for four months to have leave to sell the associated property.[6]

An inventory of his estate was completed on June 27, 1848.[7]

Note

( Note: The 1820 Census for Wilkinson County shows a James Freeman with nearest neighbor being Mary Mitchell, widow of Thomas W. Mitchell. It may be this James Freeman's cousin. One line of research is that Mary Mitchell was a Freeman. It is just a hunch, but worth running down. Jame's son James Monroe Freeman married Frances Mitchell, a daughter of the above named Mary Mitchell in Decatur County. Both families moved into Decatur County. It is not far fetched to think they married cousins. )

His wife Hannah listed as principal and son William B. Freeman as security in a bond for his orphan daughter Eliza Freeman, July 4, 1852

He passed away about 1847. He may have died while away from home. One would expect his wife to be interred next to him. Her grave is well marked. Going to the expense of erecting a decent tombstone after her death, it seems logical that the family would place one for him as well.
