Elijah enlisted on July 12, 1862 in neighboring Burke County, along with his brother David. His unit was assigned to the Army of Northern Virginia and immediately saw action. Unfortunately, before his first anniversary of service, Elijah died in a hospital at Hannover Junction, Virginia on May 24, 1863.
