Biography

John French, whose ancestry in not known, married sometime prior to 1622, probably more than a several years prior, to Sara Kingsbury.

Sarah, baptized Boxford, Suffolk, England, 5 May 1597, the daughter of "James Kingsburye & Anna his wyffe."[1]

John French is mentioned in the 9 April 1622 will of James Kingsbury,[2] in relevant part,

James Kingsbury of Boxford, in the County of Suffolk, yeoman ...
To Sara Kingsbery, my daughter, the wife of John ffrench, some cattle and a livery bed-covering, and blankets, one latten candlestick, two pieces of pewter, and other articles. To James French, my grandchild, two ewes, and to my above said daughter, Sara, certain malt.

Research Note

A Spring 2021 NEHG Register article[3] proposes that Sarah Kingsbury's older brother, Henry, married in Stoke by Nayland, Suffolk, 1613 to Jane Warren, whose ancestry is not known. Their son, Henry Kingsbury, b. 1615, reportedly married Susan French, bp. Assington, daughter of Thomas and granddaughter of Jacob French and his wife, Susan Warren.

Jacob and Susan (Warren) French had a son John French, bp. Assington, 27 March 1596. He had a daughter Sarah French buried Assington 22 January 1620/1[4] The French Family Association reports John French's wife's name was Sarah[5] but nothing is shown to support this claim.

Evidence showing Sarah Kingsbury's husband as John French, the man bp. 1596, son of Jacob, has yet to be discovered.

What is the basis for the marriage date as 1638?

John and Sarah (Kingsbury) French married earlier.

She is Sarah French in her father's 1622 will. He is John French. James Kingsbury also calls out their son, James French.
