Biography

John French was a son of Sarah Ann Steele (1823-1909) and Warren Converse French (1819-abt.1901).

John French was counted at age 6 with his birth family in the 1870 census of Woodstock, Vermont [1], which remained status quo in 1880 [2].

John was recorded in the 25 April 1910 dated census of Manhattan, New York City, married, residing in the household of his mother-in-law Julia (Parmley) Billings (1835-1914). This was a combined household, including two siblings of John's wife, Mary Montagu (Billings; 1869-1951), plus John and Mary's infant son John W French Jr (abt.1909-1984) [3]. They remained in New York in 1920 [4].

In August 1929, John French was a passenger on ship Empress of Scotland, arriving at Quebec on 17 August, re-entering the U.S. at St. Albans Vermont [5]. He again participated on a cruise in June 1931, on ship Empress of Britain, again arriving at Quebec, re-entering the U.S. at St. Albans, Vermont [6]. These records, if made available for inspection, could be useful to corroborate his precise birth date, 14 December 1863.

The 1930 census traced John and his family in Greenwich, Connecticut [7].

There were three children of this family:

  1. John W French Jr (abt.1909-1984); married 1) Rhoda Walker; 2) Eleanor Forster Clark
  2. Mary (French; 1910-1997); married Laurance Spelman Rockefeller
  3. Elizabeth (French; 1912-1976); married Ethan Allen Hitchcock

The combined census records assess that John French was a corporate lawyer.

John French passed away 4 September 1935, in Woodstock, Vermont [8]. His grave is in River Street Cemetery, Woodstock, Windsor County, Vermont, USA [9].
