The son of Philetus French (1813-1891) and Hannah Jenks (-1896), Stephen was born in New York.[1][2] His siblings included:

The family migrated to Michigan between 1858 and 1860, settling in Gilford, in Tuscola County.[3] The American Civil War broke out, and Stephen enlisted, serving as a Corporal with the 23rd Michigan Infantry. After the war, Stephen returned to his family's home in Michigan.[4] They married in Tuscola County on October 14, 1871.[5] Their children included:

Sarah passed away in 1894 and Stephen remarried, marrying Alice Verrall (1849-1934), the daughter of George Roots Verrall (1801-1856) and Harriet Hurst (1807-1869). Harriet was born in England, emigrating in 1854.[6] They married in Wells Township, Michigan, in Tuscola County, on February 5, 1898.[7] Alice had been married previously to a Mr. Wilson, and also brought children to the marriage:

She also had a daughter, Anna M. Wilson, who died in infancy. They made their home in Ellington Township, in Tuscola County, where they farmed.[6][8]
Stephen passed away at the age of 68 and is buried at Elmwood Township Cemetery (plot 47) in Gagetown, Michigan.[9]
