Biography

This profile is part of the French Name Study.

Birth

Thomas French was christened on 1 July 1610 in Lewes, Sussex, England, at All Saints Parish, where his father's name is recorded as John French.[1]

Marriage

Thomas married, first, Mary (Button) French by 1652.[2][3]

He married, second, before 1667, Deborah (Wathen) French.[2][3]

Death

No death record, will or estate files have been found. He died after 11 February 1673:

11 February 1673. On this date, Thomas French, planter, asked the town to accept his son in law, John Dudley (to whom he planned to give 20 acres), as a planter, which the town did accept[3]

Note

Thomas French came to Guilford either in 1643 or in 1648 (depending on the source), having gone first to Charlestown, MA about 1638. He is named on the 1650 list as a planter, but not a freeman. His home lot of three and one-half acres was next north of Henry Goldham's on Whitfield Street. In addition, he leased some lands and houses from John Caffinch for a period of time. Mr French had two wives. The first was Mary Button, and the second is known only by her first name of Deborah. He had a total of twelve children: Mary, Mercy, Elizabeth, Deliverance, Sarah, John, Martha, Thomas, Ebenezer, Rebecca, Samuel and Abigail. It is thought that he was one of the poorer planters. His name appears in the records of the Guilford Court in two lawsuits against John Evarts for damage to French's crops from Evarts' hogs. ***** His property, listed above, is directly adjacent the Town Green, probably the existing site of St. George's Church or close to it. {citation needed}

French-9824 and French-53 appear to represent the same person because: Despite the differences in dates, these are meant to be the same person, Son Ebenezer b. 1658 is a known son of French-53. The dates on -9824 are the dates on the unsourced Find a Grave memorial

Can someone please add Wathen-16 (Deborah Wathen) as his second wife? NEGHS 147 erroneously lists his second wife, Deborah, with the same last name as his first. The births of the children are well documented. I am adding sources and updating this profile. Thank you.

French-9824 and French-53 do not represent the same person because: The bio and/or data and/or sources of French-9824 are a combination of French-53 and French-691. -53 & -691 are both PGM with notation that they represent 2 different men. Since PM of -9824 proposed merge, her decision which of these 2 men her profile represents.
French-9824 and French-53 appear to represent the same person because: See FFA and NEHGS sources

Is there some reason that his birthplace is listed as Suffolk, England, Shouldn't it be Lewes, Sussex, England.

This Thomas French was not the son of Thomas French and Susanna Riddledale. He is an entirely different Thomas French

Hearing no objections, he will be disconnected.

Thomas French was alive in Guilford at a town meeting Feb 11, 1673 when he spoke in favor of his son-in-law John Dudley, being granted Planter status, and conferred on John 20 acres. See quote from NEHGR at French Family Assoc.

The death date here of 1665 should be reconsidered.

Thomas French-53 is connected to the wrong parents.

Please see The French Family Assoc..

The correct parents are John French and Rebecca. This Thomas French was born in Lewes, Sussex, England, christened 1 July 1610 -- NOT in Assington, Suffolk, where Thomas French son of Thomas French and Susanna (Riddlesdale) French was born.

All other data on this profile -- wife, residence, death, etc. matches Thomas French of Guilford, CT.

Please detach from Thomas French and Susanna Riddlesford.

See "DNA does not match Thomas French of Ipswich" statement at French Family Assoc..

French-1689 and French-53 appear to represent the same person because: seems to be the same - see source links for #1689 - it seems that #53 has 3 children that were born after the DoD shown for #53.
French-824 and French-437 appear to represent the same person because: Corrected birth year for French-437
