John French was born in Frampton on Severn, Gloucestershire on 19 March 1839. He was the son of Thomas French and Jane Phelps.
At the time of the 1841 England, Wales & Scotland Census, Thomas, Jane, Elizabeth, Margaret, Thomas, John, and Jane Welch were living at Town Field Farm, Frampton upon Severn, Gloucestershire, along with a governess, an agricultural labourer, and a third person with an occupation listed as "F.P." (or possibly "F.S.", "T.P.", or "T.S.")[1].
At the time of the 1861 England, Wales & Scotland Census, Jane, Elizabeth, Margaret, John, Mary A., Samuel P., Clara, and Catherine French were living at Church Farm, Frampton Street, Frampton on Severn, Gloucestershire, together with a visitor[2]. John's occupation was listed as "Draper's Assistant".
John married Maria Phillips in the fourth quarter of 1865 in Wheatenhurst, Gloucestershire[3].
At the time of the 1871 England, Wales & Scotland Census, John, Maria G., Jane G., Mary, and Maria French were living on Catherine Hill, Frome, Somerset, along with John's sister, Catherine French, his niece, Grace E. Thomas, and a servant[4][5]. John's occupation was listed as "Draper Master (employing 5 female and youth assistants)".
At the time of the 1881 England, Wales & Scotland Census, John, Maria G., Jane G., Mary, and Maria French were listed as living in Leicester House, Bath Road, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, along with John's niece, Grace E. Thomas[6]. John's occupation was listed as "Draper".
John, Maria G., Jane Grace, Mary, and Maud French were on the passenger list of the S.S. Polynesian's arrival in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada on 5 May 1882, with rail tickets booked through to Winnipeg.[7]
At the time of the 1891 Canada Census, John, M.G., and May (probably Mary) French were listed as living in New Westminster, British Columbia[8]. At the time of the census, John's occupation was listed as "Expressman".
At the time of the 1901 Canada Census, John and Maria G French were listed as living in Vancouver, British Columbia, along with a lodger[9]. At the time of the census, John's occupation was listed as "Tea Dealer".
John died in Victoria on September 19, 1905[10], and was buried in Mountain View Cemetery[11]. On his death certificate, John's occupation was listed as "Merchant".
