Robert French was a native of Scotland who followed the mercantile trade in the town of New Castle on the Delaware River in the British Colonies. He was considered a "gentleman of prominence" who filled various positions of responsibility in the colonies.
He left a lengthy will laying out his wishes that his son and heir, David French, should be educated as well as possible within the colonies and then sent to Glasgow, Scotland for higher studies in theology or medicine.
Aside from his son David, he had four daughters by his marriage to Mary Sandelands.
