Augustus Chaflin French was born on August 2, 1808 in Hill, New Hampshire, United States, son of Joseph French (1782– ) and Eunice Dickerson (1787–1827).

His father died when he was a child and he struggled to gain an education. He finally studied at home and was admitted to the bar in 1823 and had a successful law practice in Edgar Co, IL. He entered politics in 1837.

Augustus (30) married Clarissa Kitchell (20) (born February 24, 1818 on 15 October 1839 in Palestine, Crawford County, Illinois, USA; daughter of Joseph Kitchell (1780–1843) and Rachel (Looker) Kitchell (1788–1867)) in 1839. [1]

He was nominated for governor by his party and served as Illinois Governor from 1846-1853. His entire tenure as governor, he was known for his push for funding to retire the state's debt.

Their son was John J French (1841–1841)

In the 1840 census Augustus was in Crawford, Illinois.[2]

Augustus (33) married Lucy Marie Southworth (23) (born March 1, 1818 in New York, United States; daughter of Joseph Southworth (1784–1841)) in 1842.

In the 1850 census Aug (age 40), Governor, was in Springfield, Sangamon, Illinois, United States.[3]

In the 1860 census Augst (age 52), Lawyer, was in Township 2 N Range 6 W, St. Clair, Illinois.[4]

Augustus died on September 4, 1864 in Lebanon, Illinois, United States, aged 56. He was buried in College Hill Cemetery, Lebanon.[5] Augustus's estate passed probate on 20 October 1864 in St Clair, Illinois, United States.[6]
