Church of Ireland Clergy

He was born John Friend in 1754, the son of Grace Robinson and the Very Reverend William Freind, Dean of Canterbury. He was the nephew and heir of the Most Reverend Richard Robinson, Archbishop of Armagh and 1st Baron Rokeby of Armagh.

He was educated at Westminster School and entered Christ Church, Oxford on 17 June 1773, aged 18, B.A. 1776, M.A. 1779 and in Trinity College Dublin he received B.A. (ad eund. Oxon.), 1778. [1] [2]

On 3 Jan 1774, he was appointed by his uncle, with his elder brother, the Reverend William Maximilian Freind, as Registrar of the Prerogative Court, In 1778 his uncle, the Archbishop, appointed him a Prebendary of Armagh. In 1787 he was appointed Archdeacon of Armagh. In 1786 he married Mary Anne the second daughter and co-heiress of James Spencer, the Land Agent to the Duke of Leinster. In 1793 he assumed, by royal sign manual, the surname of Robinson. He became Prebendary of Rathangan (Kildare) in 1794. In Feb 1794 he took up residence at Rokeby Hall, Co. Louth, the house which he had inherited from his uncle Archbishop Richard Robinson, Lord Rokeby. He resigned his archdeaconry on 6 April 1797 and in that year, under the name 'Robinson' he became Precentor of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin and after holding that position for 26 years he vacated it in favour of his son, William Robinson.

Late in 1798 he and his family left Rokeby Hall and Ireland to return to England, as a reaction to the murder of his father-in-law by the United Irishmen rebels on 24 May. He resigned the prebend of Kildare in 1803. He was created a baronet on 14 Oct 1819. In 1821 he resigned his post of Registrar of the Prerogative Court and was immediately re-appointed to the same position which was then granted to him for his life by Archbishop William Stuart on 25 Apr 1821. He died at Hall Barn, Buckinghamshire on 16 Apr 1832.
