Biography

Sarah (Frost) Youngs was John Tuthill(-5)'s second wife and probably only the mother of his youngest child, possibly named Mary who died young. They were married in 1690 after his first wife, Deliverance King died 25 Jan 1689. The youngest of his children listed by name in Alva Tuttle's book - Nathaniel - was born in 1683. There is a 10th child listed as DY, (died young, making a total of three) who may have been named Mary. Sarah was the widow of Thomas Youngs and (according to Alva Tuttle) the daughter of John & Mercy (Paine) Frost. [This is almost certainly incorrect - see Research Note][1]

Thomas Youngs, Thomas, son of Rev. John was born c 1627, and died probably before 1686. He married 2) Sarah, daughter of John Frost in 1658; she "...probably m. John Tuthill in May 1690"[2]

Research Notes

Sarah Frost, daughter of John and Mercy, was born 3 Sep 1675 (sic - impossible if she married in 1658) , and died 8 Nov 1727. She married 1) Thomas Youngs of Southold, and 2) John Tuthill on 28 May 1690, In 1698 they buried a daughter Mary, aged 8 years. [3]

While John & Mercy (Paine) Frost do seem to have had a daughter Sarah they were married in 1664 and Moore's 1698 Index states Sarah, daughter of John Frost, married Thomas Youngs, son of Rev. John in 1658, and that he had a son Thomas with her in 1660. [4] Also Tuttle gives her dob as 1635.

The Frost Genealogy states that:

"After 1656, all by the name of Frost had disappeared from Southold with the exception of Sarah, daughter of one John, (ie either William's brother John or their father also named John) who married Thomas, brother of the Rev. Youngs of that place, but at what date is not known. However, she as a widow with a family married in 1690 John Tuthill of Southold, they having one daughter who died young."

and additionally:

"WILLIAM FROST, who was born prior to 1635, was in Southold, Long Island, as early as 1655..." - so he wasn't born there, and later that John & Abigail returned to New Haven where son John married Mercy Paine in 1665.[3] which may imply the children were born in New Haven.

"Thomas Youngs (Young-3418) was the son of John Youngs and Joan Jentilman, born 1 May 1625 in Southwold, Suffolk, England. He died in Elizabeth Town, N. J., between April and September 1686."[5] quoted from WT profile.

In reference to Mary:

"MARY (daughter of [John Tuthill's} 2nd wife), d. 1I Jan. 1698/99, aged about 8 years."[6] If Mary was about 8 when she died in Jan1698/9 and Thomas died in 1686 and Deliverance died in 1689 Mary was most likely the daughter of John & Sarah.

Regarding Sarah - widow of John Tuthill

Regarding Mary - Tuthill child or Youngs child

The Salmon Records page 7: "169.* Jan. 11 Mary Youngs died." - footnote for * - probably 1698-9 - (https://archive.org/stream/salmonrecordspri00salm#page/7/mode/2up)

Typically these records would state for a child: "John Tuthills child Mary" - if Mary was his child.

That the record states Mary Youngs - possibly indicates she was a child of Sarah (Frost) Youngs.

Or that she was an adult named Mary Youngs, a totally different person, because, as you point out, the father was generally noted for a child’s death.

“The above sd. John Tuthill Ser. Was married to Sarah Yongs: May the 28: in ye Year of our Lord 1690. Their Daughter Mary Yongs was borne ————and departed this life Jenewy ye 11 (or 19] 1698/99.” Long Island source records, Hoff, page 158

It sounds as though this child born during their marriage was the daughter of her former husband.

Hi Anne

Thank you for bringing this file to my attention - it certainly needs some TLC.

As far as Mary is concerned It's going to take some digging. John & Sarah were married in 1690, Thomas Youngs, son of Rev John "d. prob. before 1686, perh. 1689" (Moore's Index referenced, pg 50). Sarah could have come to the marriage with an infant or toddler or possibly pregnant, I haven't found a dob for Mary. Sarah would have been 50 in 1685, 55 in 1690. I'm only aware of a reference to one child she had with Thomas, a son Thomas b 1660, ie up to 30 years earlier. (Moore's Index).

I haven't dug very far yet. One problem, as always, is the number of same name people - many John Tuthills, some number of Sarah Frosts, Thomas Youngs...Also I haven't yet found an accessible online copy of Hoff's Long Island Source Records.

If Mary was about 8 when she died in Jan1698/9 and Thomas died in 1686 and Deliverance died in 1689 Mary was most likely the daughter of John & Sarah. See research notes
