Biography

Herbert William Frost was born on February 3, 1906 to William Frost and Louis Giltrow in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, England. His mother died soon after his birth, having entrusted her husband and child to the care of her sister Ruth. Ruth subsequently married Herbert's father though sadly he was not very kind to them, possibly in some way connecting the child with his mother's death. However Herbert's aunt/step mother treated the child as her own and when her two children were born all were equally cherished. Sometime late in 1911 or early in 1912 the family moved to Thetford in Norfolk which was the home of Herbert's father's family and they stayed there until about 1927, when they moved to Batford near Harpenden, Hertfordshire. While he was still young Herbert acquired the nickname Claude and was always known by that name. He learnt the trade of basket-making from his father and after the family moved to Hertfordshire he began to learn printing, but not for long. He went to Luton and worked as a hat maker but in 1933 he married Freda Palmer and they went to live in Woodbridge, Suffolk where they ran a shop and removal business. Later they moved to Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire where Claude was an upholsterer and also did repairs in rush and cane work, while Freda made curtains etc. They had two children and several grandchildren. When they retired they continued to live in Wheathampstead and Claude died in the Red House Hospital, Harpenden, on March 12, 1997. He was buried in St. Helen's Churchyard at Wheathampstead.
