Biography

Family

Wife: Julie Mercier, daughter of Jean Mercier and Claudine or Clothilde Bertelon.[1]

Children:

  1. Aurelien born about 1817[1]
  2. Francois born 5 February 1819.[2]
  3. Aureline born 6 November 1821.[3]

Early Life

Francois Fruge was born 1 December 1759 to Pierre Francois Augustin Fruge and Catherine Dumoulin and baptized the the 16th of the same month at St. Francis of Pointe Coupee.[4] His maternal grandmother, Marie Marquis, was one of his sponsors.

The family appears on the September 1763 census of Pointe Coupee as "Fruget" living with one woman, 3 boys under the age of 14 and 1 girl under the age of 12. They have no livestock, land, or weapons noted.[5]

Descendants of Francois Fruge may qualify for membership in the Daughter's of the American Revolution as there are two possible names on the Opelousas Militia 1776 Muster Roll that may be him.[6] He also appears on the 8 June 1777 militia list. [7] A Francois Fruge also appears on the 30 July 1785 militia roll.[8]

He shows up in the 1777 Opelousas Census[9] and is listed as 26 years old which is incorrect as are many of the ages in that census entry.

Around that time or after the family had settled in what was called Prairie Fakaitaic, near present-day Eunice, LA. Some sources estimate that they settled there around 1775.[10][11]

Prairie Fakaitaic is included in the May 1796 census and shows Francois Fruge with a woman over the age of 15[12]. Living nearby are his brothers Jean, Nicolas, Pierre, and Joseph. It's not clear who the woman is. The 1810 census shows him at the reported age of over 45 years living with a woman aged 26-44 with no children.[13]

Later Years

Francois moved to Avoyelles Parish in 1813.[10] He married Julie Mercier, the daughter of Jean Mercier & Claudine or Clothilde Bertelon and the widow of Menard, on 26 June 1821 after living with her for seven years and the birth of two children, a son named Aurelien and a daughter named Francoise.[1]

There is a succession for a Francois Fruge dated 2 August 1854.[14] Many family trees attribute this to this Francois Fruge but since an older Francois is not found on censuses in later years, it is more likely the succession of Francois fils. The Fruge's of Fakaitaic also assigns this probate to Francois fils and notes he had no issue. [11]
