Biography

Virgil Pierre was the youngest of at least eleven children born to Pierre Antoine Fruge and Susanne Burns in Opelousas, St. Landry Parish, LA on 19 Sep 1814 .[1] He was baptized at St. Landry Church on 15 July 1815 with his sponsors being Antoine Pierre Frugé, his eldest brother, and Adriene Istre.[1][2] On 24 Oct 1830, he served as sponsor, along with his mother, for his nephew, Thomas Dyson, the son of his sister Catherine Fruge and her soon-to-be husband James Dyson.[3]

On 26 Mar 1836, Vigile and Marie Louise Courville were married civilly at the Opelousas Court House.[4][5] On 5 Apr 1836 they were married at St. Landry Catholic Church in Opelousas.[6][7]

Sometime between 16 Feb 1857, when Vigile took the oath of office as Constable of the 18th Old Police Jury Ward in the Parish of St Landry[8] and the 19 Jul 1860 US Census, the family moved to Jefferson County, Texas.[9] By the year 1870, they were back in Louisiana, in the newly formed[10] Cameron Parish.[11] They returned to Jefferson County, Texas by the time of the 1880 US Census.[12]

The 1886 Jefferson County Tax Rolls shows he owned two lots of land valued at $200, had two horses or mules, and four cattle for the total value of property equal to $253. He paid a total of $1.77 in state, county, and school taxes. Since he was over age 60, he paid no poll tax.[13]

By the time he wrote his last will and testament on 24 Nov 1887, he is a widower, and his daughter Selestine has been caring for him. He leaves half of his estate to her and names her and Oscar Holt as executors.[14] His probate, filed 23 Jan 1888 indicates he died 23 Dec 1887.[14]
