Biography

Isaac, son of Isaac Fryer and his wife, Mary Tanfield, was born in Leeds Workhouse in 1790 and was baptised at St Peter on the 16th of April. [1]

He married Mary Murgatroyd, daughter of James Murgatroyd and his wife, Mary Padgett, at All Saints, Harewood, on the 6th of September 1815. [2] In 1841 he and Mary were living in Stansfield Row, Leeds with four children of their own and a year old baby called Henry Atkinson. Isaac was employed as an agricultural labourer so presumably he had not remained in the workhouse long enough to have benefited from a trade training. [3] He was still living at Stansfield Row in 1851, unemployed, but Mary was working as a char. Henry Atkinson was still with them (described as relative) and also in the household was 5 year old Sarah, illegitimate daughter of Isaac and Mary's daughter, Jane. [4] Isaac was back in work as an agricultural labourer in 1861 but Henry Atkinson then aged 21 was working as a forgeman and described as grandson. Jane had produced another illegitimate child, James, who was then 9. Isaac's widowed sister-in-law, Sarah Leedham, aged 71 was living with them. [5] Isaac had a big heart.

Isaac died at Kirkstall in 1861 [6] and was buried at St Michael, Headingley on the17th of November 1862. [7] NOTE That is about a year after his death was registered. This may not have been the same man.

Research Notes

Isaac and Mary seem, from the Census returns, to either be unsure just how old they are, or to be unwilling to divulge for some reason.

Just who is Henry Atkinson? He appears in all three census returns, sometimes as Isaac's grandson, at others merely a relative.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Isaac by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Isaac:
