John Fulford was born about 1504 (aged 14 years and more at the Inquisition Post Mortem of his father, dated 15 April 1518).[1] He was the son of William Fulford[2] and Joan Bonville.[1] He was Sheriff of Devon in 1534 and 1540.[1]
He married Dorothy Bourchier, a daughter of John Bourchier, 1st Earl of Bath (1470–1539), of Tawstock, Devon.[1] Their exact date of marriage is unknown but it was presumable before the birth of their son John in 1524/5. There was a settlement after marriage dated 2 October 1533.[3]
Vivian assigns them two additional daughters, Faith who married Captain John Davies and another daughter who married to . . . . . . English of Totnes.[1] They are actually their grandaughters being the daughters of their son Andrew Fulford and his wife Eleanor.[6][7][8]
Dorothy survived John and according to Vivian, she remarried to Walter Denys of Holcombe Burnell, Devon, however, a source for this is not provided.[1] His daughter Elizabeth Fulford married Humphrey Arundell (c. 1513 – 1550) of Helland in Cornwall, the leader of Cornish forces in the Prayer Book Rebellion who was executed at Tyburn.
His will dated 11 July 1544 and proved 31 May 1546 mentions:[9]
Andrewe ffulforde my seconde sonne
Dame Dorothye my wife
my Brother Robarte ffulforde
John ffulforde my sonne and heire apparente (executor)
Balwyne ffulforde my brother
my brother James ffulforde
