Elijah Knapp and his wife, Harriet Loomis, Joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1842, in NY. In 1844 they moved to Nauvoo where Harriet and three of their children died during the persecutions of the Saints at that time. He remarried in 1846 and then set out with his three surviving children to cross the plains to the Great Salt Lake Valley. Elijah's second wife divorced him, and he married a third one in 1850 and a fourth in 1851. Being called by the Church, he made an abortive attempt to settle the Las Vegas, Nevada area. Then in 1851, he was called instead to help with the development of southern Utah. (Elijah and his sons are listed on the monument of the first Dixie pioneers located at Dixie State University)
He and his families helped establish the town of Harrisburg, in Washington County, Utah. Unlike Pine, this town no longer exists. But his fourth polygamous wife, Ellen Celeste Woodward, along with seven of her younger children, were among the founders of the Pine community. In 1877. Elijah's two eldest sons, Wyllys Darwin "Wid" and Revilo "Vi" Fuller, along with several other men, traveled to central Arizona under the direction of the Church to scout out the Tonto Basin for possible colonization. These two were children of his first wife, Harriet Loomis. They had been born in NY, crossed the plains with their father from Nauvoo, and accompanied him to Harrisburg. In 1880, Wid and his brother Cornelius, together with their half-brother John Hiram "Hi" Fuller and Wid's 9-year-old son Alfred, drove a herd of about 50 cattle from "Dixie" across the Colorado River and down into the East Verde River west of Payson.
The families traveled with a group of other pioneers, including "Hi's" mother Ellen Celeste and her other children, and Alfred J. Randall and his wife Ruth Campkin. The latter was the sister of Wid's deceased wife Anne Belle Campkin. The trip took nearly 6 months and was very arduous, with bad weather, lack of forage, illness, and small children. Several babies were born along the way, they lost some of their horses, ran out of supplies, and generally had an extremely difficult time. Elijah Knapp Fuller remained in Harrisburg with his sixth Polygamous wife, Harriet Alice Walker, until 1882, when he moved to Cedar City. There, the Indians stole so many of their cattle and horses that they decided to join the rest of the family in Arizona. On their way they stopped off in Harrisburg, Elijah got injured, and they never did go to Arizona. He died in 1897 in Leeds, Utah. Ellen Celeste Woodward Fuller, his fourth wife, was the only one who came to Pine.
