Hugo was born in Brooklyn and lived there until the age of seventeen. He loved swimming and swam for the Saint George Dragon Club. He told me that his sister Edna introduced him to horseback riding and that they would ride in Prospect Park.
Hugo attended Brooklyn Tech High School but left a couple of months before graduating to join the Army Air Force during World War II, and enlisted 16 July 1943. The war ended after he was sent to Tinian Island in the Pacific, where he had to wait several months before having enough credits to get back to the U.S. He told me that it was there that he began weightlifting, and when he outstripped the weights available to him, he began to lift railroad ties with a native of the island. He continued lifting weights the rest of his life.
After World War II he ended up in New Mexico, where he became a surveyor and where he met and married his wife, Mavis Hudson. In later years, I once asked him which state he liked the best, and he told me "New Mexico".
Hugo and his wife moved to Columbus, Ohio, where she worked full time as a nurse while he attended Ohio State University. He earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering there and worked as an electrical engineer for decades.
Hugo was an excellent roller skater and dance skater. I have many happy memories of going to Playland Roller Skating Rink in Atlanta, Georgia with him, and flying around the rink while dance skating, my father supporting and guiding me.
However, the very best memories are of horseback riding with him, both in the Atlanta area, and later in Rhode Island. He had a wonderful cutting horse named Buck.
Hugo was a natural with all animals. He could go up to any animal, even anxious or scared ones, and calm them down.
