Biography

Obediah was born in 1765. He passed away in 1845.

1. Obediah (FULKS) FULTZ was born in 1765 in Virginia. He died about 1844 in Carter Co, KY. He is often said to have been born in Russell County, though the source for this is unclear. At the time of his birth, that would have been Augusta County, where a number of Fultzes can be documented.

He first appeared on the Russell County personal property tax lists for 1788 in the "Upper District"[1] and regularly appeared in them for the next several decades, though he does not appear on the land tax list, so he probably was not a land owner at that time.

In 1793, he was a signatory on a petition from inhabitants of the frontiers of Wythe County, Virginia.[2]

Several years later in 1797-8, we find him signing a petition to form Tazewell County (along with several Blankenships),[3] so he was probably fairly itinerant in this period. He was missing from the Russell tax lists in 1798. It is worth noting that his daughter Priscilla (probably the eldest) married in Tazewell Co. in 1807, which corroborates the connection to Wythe/Tazewell.

He was married to Martha C. BLANKENSHIP (daughter of Joseph BLANKENSHIP and Phoebe SUMMERFIELD) on 16 Oct 1787 in Bedford Co, VA. Richard Wilbourn was listed as the surety and it notes the consent of her father Joseph Blankenship. Martha C. BLANKENSHIP was born about 1770 in Chesterfield Co, VA. She died after 1860 in Carter Co, KY. Obediah (FULKS) FULTZ and Martha C. BLANKENSHIP had the following children:

  1. Priscilla (FULKS) FULTZ. (m. Peter Gollahue in Tazewell Co. in 1807)
  2. Arthur FULTZ.
  3. John FULTZ.Abt. 1793, Russell Co, Va;
  4. Joseph FULTZ was born about 1794 in Virginia.
  5. Hezekiah FULTZ.
  6. Robert H. FULTZ.
  7. Martha (Patsy) FULTZ.
  8. Elizabeth FULTZ.
  9. Wesley Fantley FULTZ.

Research Notes

Russell was formed in 1787 from Washington County, which had been formed from Fincastle in 1776, which was formed from Botetourt County in 1772, which was formed from Augusta in 1769. Bedford Co., where he married, is quite some distance from Russell Co., though it's probably fair to say that it's at least the same geographic region.

There are various statements about his parentage in secondary sources, though none seem to have any primary source documentation. Both Adam Fultz and an elder Obediah Fultz have been put forth as his father.

Possible relatives would include Andreas Volck Sr., Johann Jacob Fulk, Joshua Foltz (1760 - 1833) of Shenandoah, and George Fultz of Augusta. There is also a John Fulks who appears in Russell tax lists in the other district in the 1790s, so he seems quite likely to be related.

Obadiah was born in 1765. He passed away in 1845.

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Obediah by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Obediah:
