Note

Note:   272. Adolph Von Der Burg (Source: Guy Funderburk, Funderburk Castles and Conquests, (The Cory Press, Monroe, NC: 1975), p 27.), born Abt. 1675. He married 273. Princess Elizabeth Anna of Berg.
      273. Princess Elizabeth Anna of Berg (Source: (1) Guy Funderburk, Funderburk Castles and Conquests, (The Cory Press, Monroe, NC: 1975)., (2) Al Funderburk.), born Abt. 1680; died Abt. 1722 (Source: Al Funderburk.). She was the daughter of 546. Duke Philipp William of Berg and 547. Elizabeth Amalie Magdalena.
Notes for Adolph Von Der Burg:
One hundred years after the family rift in the House of Berg which exploded into the Thirty Years War Charles Philipp was Duke of Berg. He had succeeded his brother, Jan Wellem in 1716, but he had no son to succeed him. When his only daughter, Sophia, died in 1728 the ducal crown was growing dim for his line. She left three minor sons, but Charles' sister, Elizabeth (wife of Adolph) had three sons with a likely stronger claim for the Ducal Crown. Elizabeth was a half-sister to Charles Philipp. She married a distant relative, ADOLPH VON DER BURG, of old line House of Berg.
Available evidence indicates that Adolph and Elizabeth and their sons (and doubtless daughters) belonged to the Dompelaers (German Brethren). Some members of this faith had already been imprisoned by Duke Charles Philipp, a Catholic, and others so persecuted that they fled to America, to Pennsylvania. When the three boys reached maturity they constituted a triple threat to Charles Philipp--religion, property, and throne.
Adolph and Elizabeth may have moved from Berg into Hesse for safety while their sons were yet boys, but they knew their rightful heritage and so taught their sons. When the two oldest reached maturity, Peter, being the second, knew that he would not receive the ducal crown even if successful in their claims, went to Holland (probably among kin) and from their to Ireland where he married. John remained in the homeland and married (probably in the royal house of Saxony.) He married about 1720 and had 7 sons. After his cousin, Sophia, who had died in 1728, he would have been the next in line for the ducal crown. but it would not be available until after the death of Charles Philipp.
Eventually, due to threats from Charles Philipp, the three brothers (and possibly sisters) and their families came up with a plan to move themselves out of Charles Philipp's reach in the New World.
The Atlantic voyage in those days was fraught with indescribable hardship and danger. Conditions were crowded and otherwise uncomfortable. Sanitation was bad. Even food and water sometimes brought on sickness. Many people died and were buried at sea. Violent storms were a constant threat on the high seas, and often took their toll in shipwrecks. Consequently, distribution of the family onto two or more ships was wise.
The family did sail on two, possibly "three ships." They were headed for Philadelphia, PA. "The Golden Beaver", "The Thistle" and possibly one other.
"The Golden Beaver" on which John's family traveled was wrecked off the Carolina coast. The only survivor was Hans Devauld Funderburg, son of John. He was rescued by a ship carrying German immigrants.

I am a direct descendant of Hans Devauld Funderburg going back from the eldest of each generation, ending with me being the eldest of my generation. If anyone happens to read this I would love help with officially confirming this, for lack of a better term. I will receive an email for any reply left here.
