Biography

Joseph Fuqua was a relation of a Huguenot emigrant (1540-1790).

Joseph was the son of Guillaume Fouquet and Jane Eyres

He married Anna Sampson about 1720 in Charles City County, Virginia. [1]

Joseph and Anna were the parents of:

  • William Fuqua
  • Joseph Fuqua

Property:

  • 12 September, 1733: Three hundred and Fifty Acres lying and being in the County of Goochland on the South side of the James River between Deep Creek and Muddy Creek and bounded ...Stephen Hughes' Corner, John Maddox...Nicholas Cox. [2]
  • 20 July 1756: Joseph and Amey [Anny?] Fuqua, Southam Parish, Cumberland Co., to Joseph Sanders, Farnham Parish, Essex Co., 50, 235 acres, Wolf Branch, adj. John Pleasants, John Mattocks, "being part of a Dividend of Land granted formerly by patent to Ralph Headspeck (Hudspeth?)...." Joseph and Anney signed by marks. Wits: Alexander Fowler, John Gordon. Recorded same date. (By that time, Joseph had picked up more land, and presumably chose to live there, since the land remained his until he deeded it to Joseph Jr. in 1782). [3]
  • 4 May 1772: Catherine McGehee, Jacob McGehee, Frederick Hatcher, excrs. of William McGehee of Cumberland Co. to Joseph Fuqua Sr.,160, 619 acres, Blewstone Creek and Maherrin River, east side of King's Road, Goodes Line, Hansons Corner, Lovelle Line, Burton. Witnesses: Stephen M. Craw, John Fuqua, Stephen Fuqua. Rec. 4 May 1772 by John and Stephen Fuqua. [4] Although son, Stephen, was omitted from the Deed of Trust of 21 October 1782, his heirs were taken care of with this transaction.
  • 29 August 1782: Joseph (x) Fuqua Sr. to Joseph Fuqua Jr., 5, 350 acres granted by patent 12 Sept. 1733, where he now lives. Wits: John Griffin, John Bradley, Jacob McGehee. (Anna does not sign this deed, which probably means that she had died before 1782. Joseph was, of course, very elderly by then, and the deed is probably in anticipation of death). [5]
  • 4 July 1783: Joseph Fuqua Sr., Cumberland Co., to Obedience Weatherford, d/o Stephen Fuqua, 5m 398 acres, branches of Maherrin River, half of tract bought from McGehee, "being the land and plantation whereon Stephen Fuqua formerly lived", bounded by John Fuqua, Stephen, Fuqua dec'd., Joseph Lee. Signed x. Wits: Joseph (x) Fuqua Jr., William (x) Dunford, Jacob McGehee. Rec. 6 Oct. 1783. (Why the land went to a granddaughter, leaving out Obedience's siblings and ignoring her widowed mother, might be a very good story if we knew it. Perhaps Joseph did not like Temperance Robinson). [6]

Deeds of Trust:

  • 21 October, 1782: Deed of Trust - Joseph Fuqua to Joseph Fuqua Jnr and Jacob McGehee, Powhatan Co to William Fuqua, John Fuqua, sons of Joseph; Willliam & Jane Sampson, Bridge Beasley, William & Margaret Weatherford, John & Elizabeth Hill, Sara & Jacob McGehee, daughters of Joseph. "in consideration that the said Joseph Fuqua is now advanced in age and for some time past infirm so as not to be able to look after his own business," slaves to be held in trust for his children, Rec 18 Oct 1782. (One son, Stephen, was omitted from the trust, presumably because he was dead by then. For unknown reasons, Joseph seems to have rescinded this trust three years later). [7]
  • 24 October 1785: Joseph (x) Fuqua Sr. to son Joseph and son-in-law Jacob McGehee, all the slaves in the preceding deed of trust. Rec. 24 Oct. 1785. [8]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:
