Harold was an only child. He became a physician in Pontiac, Michigan in 1929. Was the only MI congressional Medal of Honor Winner during WWI. He was raised by Mary Helen Manning Hamilton. He was a pacificist.
Harold Furlong's mother was the daughter of a Hamilton father and Manning mother. Harold's mother died when he was 2 months old. Until age 15 he was raised by his grandmother, Mary Helen Manning Hamilton and lived with her on Five Mile Rd just east of Pontiac Trial and Worden Cemetery. He lived in the large Hamilton homestead, built in the 1830s but burned down in 1970s.
He returned to Pontiac to attend High School and lived with his father in a house on North Saginaw Street just North of the Sears and Roebuck Store.
Harold's education: Pontiac High School, then Michigan Agricultural College where he was a member of the Army ROTC. When World War I started he became a 2nd Lieutenant in the Infantry. He returned from the War and entered the University of Michigan Medical School, Graduating on June 16, 1925. Harold's profession was a much respected and greatly liked obstetrician in Pontiac Oakland County MI. He practiced until he was 75.
Harold Arthur Furlong was of the 11th generation of Wm Manning line. Harold was the only person from Michigan to earn the Congressional Medal of Honor during WWI. Pinned by Gen Pershing.
