Minnie Gadd married Clarence Frederick Scott on 26 December 1921 at St. Matthew's Church, St. Albans. Fred, as he was known as, was a bachelor aged 23 and a painter. His parents were named as William Scott, a motor driver, and Elizabeth Ann Scott nee Wells. Minnie was a spinster aged 20. Her parents were named as David Gadd, a blacksmith, and Rose Amelia Gadd, nee Godfrey. Both gave their usual address as St. Albans. Their witnesses were William C. Scott of 176 Edgware Rd, Christchurch, a labourer, and Jean Muir of 20 Duncan St, Spreydon, a shop assistant.

From The Press dated 19 January 1922, Pg 2 - WEDDINGS. SCOTT – GADD. A very pretty wedding was celebrated recently at St. Matthew’s Church, St. Albans, when Miss Minnie Gadd, third daughter of Mr and Mrs Gadd, Madras street, St. Albans, was married to Mr Clarence Frederick Scott, fifth son of Mr and Mrs W. Scott, also of St. Albans. The bride, who entered the church on the arm of her father, was handsomely attired in white satin charmeuse, trimmed with pearls. She wore the usual veil and orange blossoms, and carried a beautiful white shower bouquet of sweet peas, roses, and Canterbury bells. Little Edna Clarke made a dainty flower girl, dressed in a scalloped eau de nil flock, relieved with pink. The chief bridesmaid, Miss Elsie Gadd, sister of the bride, wore a pretty frock of salmon pink crepe de chine, trimmed with rosebuds. The second bridesmaid, Miss Jean Muir, wore maize crepe de chine, with touches of mauve. The bridesmaids and flower girl wore wreaths of silver leaves and rosebuds to match their dresses, and the bridesmaids carried pretty showers bouquets of pink and mauve sweet peas, and maidenhair fern. Little Gladys Clarke presented the bride, as she reached the church door, with a horseshoe of white crepe de chine and pink ribbon. The reception was held afterwards at Winton street Hall, where the bride’s mother, attired in black crepe de chine dress, with hat to match, received the guests. The happy couple were the recipients of many valuable and useful presents, including several cheques. Later Mr and Mrs Scott left for their honeymoon.

This couple had three children named Francis Richard Scott born 8 June 1923, Rose Amelia Scott born 25 April 1935, and a second daughter, all born in Christchurch.

From The Press dated 9 June 1923, Pg 1 - BIRTH. SCOTT – On June 8th, at Nurse Miles’s, New Brighton, to Mr and Mrs C. F. Scott (nee Gadd), of Marriott’s road, North Beach – a son. No visitors.

In the 1928 electoral roll this couple were living at "Nirvana", Marriotts Road, North Brighton. Fred was still a painter.

In the 1935 and 1938 electoral rolls their address was 88 Bowhill Rd, New Brighton. Fred was then a house decorator. Minnie's mother Rose Gadd lived with the Scott family following her husband's death. In the 1946 to 1957 rolls the family was living at 59 Chancellor St, Shirley. Then from the 1969 to 1981 electoral rolls Fred and Minnie were living at 12 Porritt Place, Dallington and Fred had retired.

An address book belonging to Minnie's cousin Doris Gadd states her last address as 41A Waitaki St, Bexley.

A newspaper clipping dated 26 December 1981 reads - DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER. For Fred and Minnie Scott it has been the classic romance story - from childhood friendship to a 60-year marriage. Celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary today, they recalled how they met as neighbours in Madras St and went to school together at Christchurch East School. Minnie's dates with Fred usually meant an uncomfortable trip on the bar of Fred's bicycle - "I used to go miles on the bar of his bike." Now she is confined to a wheelchair after a series of strokes, and the couple are "happy to end our days quietly." Since their marriage, at the former St. Matthews Church in Colombo St in 1921, the Scotts have spent only one week apart, when Minnie holidayed in Wellington. Living first at North Beach and later at Shirley, they brought up a son and two daughters who have provided them with 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. They look back at the highlight of their marriage as a world trip in 1959, when they visited relatives in Britain and spent time in Tahiti, America, Europe and the East. The couple has also had several trips back and forth to Australia, where Minnie was born. At 83, Fred is able to lift and look after an incapacitated Minnie and still enjoys gardening. After 60 years of happy marriage Fred describes himself as a realist on the subject - "I know a lot of people say they have never had an argument. Well you've got to to have the odd pip, haven't you?" But at least having an easily-remembered Boxing Day wedding anniversary has removed one frequent source of marital disharmony. [with photograph]

Records confirm Clarence, Minnie and their youngest daughter left Wellington aboard the Johan van Oldenbarnevelt and arrived in Southampton, England on 18 June 1959. Records show they intended to stay in the U. K. for 4 months. Their address there was stated as c/- Mrs. I. Peplow, "Almeda" Vicarage Rd, Blackheath. [The name of the person the Scott's were staying with should have read Mrs. T. Peplow. Rose Miriam Peplow was the daughter of Clara Whyle nee Gadd.]

The family rejoined the ship at Southampton, sailing for Wellington, New Zealand on 8 October 1959.

The Johan van Oldenbarnevelt was refitted and upgraded in 1959 for around-the-world services. The new route was from Holland via the Mediterranean and Suez to Australia then across the Pacific to the Panama Canal, Florida and return across the Atlantic. Each ship made three or four circuits per year, interspersed with occasional cruises.

Minnie Scott died on 8 December 1985 at Christchurch aged 84 years. She was buried on 11 December 1985 at Bromley Cemetery [Block 1, Plot 271], next to her parents.

There are so many memories that I have I wouldn’t have enough time to put them all down but two are our (the grandchildren) nickname for her and baking.

I always, like most in the family, called her ‘Macott’, brought about by my brother’s difficulty (when he was small) to pronounce the ‘S’ in Ma Scott. In fact I didn’t know her real name until I was about 9 or 10 years old, when I remember being assumed by the name Minnie given her small stature and the similarity to another famous Minnie (Minnie Mouse). And then her baking particular Christmas Pudding, Queen Cakes and Louise Cake. Oh how I still miss them. Many have tried her recipes (including me) but no they are never the same.
