Margaret (Gaines) French was a Virginia colonist.

Research Notes

She is not the same Margaret that married John Prosser (1640-1677).

Margaret Gaines, b. ca.1663 was assumed by some to have married Ralph Rowzee because the latter is mentioned in Margaret's father's will as a "son-in-law,"[1] but as Margaret Amundson shows, the Ralph Rowzee mentioned in Daniel Gaines will is his step-son — the son of Daniel's wife's first husband, Ralph Rowzee, Sr.[2]

Per Margaret Amundson's research, Margaret Gaines did not marry Ralph Rowzee.[3]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Margaret by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Margaret:

Here is the profile for Col. Simon Miller, possibly related to Margaret as his mother.

Simon Miller (abt. 1670 - bef. 1720) https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Miller-446 https://www.geni.com/people/Col-Simon-Miller/6000000008248436383

Though, obviously, more research needed.

Gaines-219 and Gaines-211 appear to represent the same person because: same married name, no primary sources for the birth.

Removed Ralph Rowzee as husband of Margaret Gaines per cited research and examination of Old Rappahannock and Essex County, VA records. Ralph did marry a woman named Margaret about 1710 after the death of his wife, Rebecca Tomlin, just not this Margaret..

" When the dates for Margaret (?) Prosser, Miller, French and later Sommerville are compared with Margaret the daughter of Daniel Gaines the answer is obvious. They were not the same Margaret." (last page)

...If these are not the same, and there are records for A "Margaret" : MARGARET (?) PROSSER, MILLER, FRENCH AND LATER SOMMERVILLE. (see next to last page)

Could we create a Margaret Unknown to attach to Hugh French, and move their children to her? That would match up with the records available, and free up Ms. Gaines.

Gaines-219 and Gaines-211 do not represent the same person because: Too many unanswered questions between the two profiles. When these questions are addressed and reconciled, the merger could be approved.

Please review the pending merge with Gaines-211 and either remove the relationships between Gaines-219 and Rowzee-6, Rowsey-19, and Prosser-577 so that the merge can be completed; or create an unmerged match until question can be answered to your satisfaction. Thanks!

I think we have two options: (1) create an unmerged match until the Gaines-219 profile managers have time to do more research on Rowzee-6, Rowsey-19, and Prosser-577; or (2) ask the profile managers or someone on the trusted list of Gaines-219 to make the changes and approve the merge. I'll post this to Gaines-219 as well.

Fred, I agree with your comments regarding clarification before approving the merger with Gaines-211. How do we put this in a rejected or pending file? I'm fairly new at this so any help would be appreciated.

I am reluctant to merge Gaines-219 into Gaines-211 until after the relationships with Rowzee-6, Rowsey-19, and Prosser-577 have been removed from the unsourced profile of Gaines-219. Please see "Daniel Gaines of Colonial Virginia," by Margaret Amundson for justification.

Is this her correct nickname? We know this because (source)...

Gaines-1202 and Gaines-211 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, same parent. Recommend retain info from Gaines-1202 as info in Gaines-211 is uncertain and unsourced. Thanks!
