Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Bernard Gaines was a Virginia colonist.

His father, Daniel Gaines received land grants in 1653 in Virginia and according to his will dated 1682, Bernard was not of age. Therefore, Bernard was not born in England, but rather Virginia and he could not have been born prior to 1661 if he was under the age of 21 in 1682.

Bernard Gaines was born about 1648/50 in England, the son of Capt. Daniel Gaines and Margaret (possibly Bernard) (nee Rouzee). He married Martha Taylor, daughter of George Taylor and Martha Tomlin, and they had:

  1. Mary, m. bef. 1704 to James Taylor of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent Co., VA, d. 1704
  2. Daniel, m. Martha Taylor
  3. Bernard
  4. George, b. 1670, m. Elinore Brown, d. 1726

In the will of Martha's father, George Taylor, in Rappahannock Co. -- now Richmond Co., Virginia -- he mentioned, besides his second wife, Susannah (will probated 7 Aug 1706), as his legatees, his daughter, Martha Taylor Gaines; her youngest son George Gaines, and her oldest son, Daniel Gaines. [1]

Bernard died 17 Aug 1747 in Richmond, Colony of Virginia.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Bernard by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Bernard:

From the book "Marriages of Richmond County (VA)" is the following: "It appears the will of Bernard Gaines was recorded about two years after his death. He mentioned property in Albemarle County and there is an inventory of his personal estate of record in that county." Noland 588.

Bernard Gaines (1650-1747) must have been previously married, as his first three children were born before he married Martha Taylor in 1693. I found the name, Elizabeth Jameson (1656-1693), who might have been his first wife. However, the only documentation of her is on other Ancestry.com trees and Geneanet.com trees, none with any documentation other than her name; date and place of her birth and death.

Dear Profile Manager:

If Bernard was born in 1650 as attested in his profile, he would have been of age in 1682 when his supposed father Daniel Gaines died. Daniel Gaines' will mentions Bernard and from wording it is assumed that Bernard was not 'of age'.

So do we have the wrong Bernard as being the son of Daniel Gaines or was there just a slip-up when this profile was created?

I am a descendant of a Bernard Gaines and his father Daniel and it would be great to have correct dates attached to Bernard's profile.

Thanks very much.

Colonial Settlers indicates that Bernard was born after 1664, in Sittingbourne Parish, Old Rappahannock County, Virginia

His father, Daniel's Will is transcribed on the same page
