I found a reference to a Captain Richard Gaines while researching land deeds in Charlotte County, VA: On January 10, 1823, Henry Roberts purchased land from David and Elizabeth Jones for "fifteen hundred dollars Virginia currency." The property was on the waters of Ward's fork with neighbors Cob Jones, Dickerson Jennings, and Captain Richard W. Gaines. The 300 acres of land was surveyed by Samuel F.
