Francis Gaines was part of a Southern Pioneer Family.


Francis Gaines was born on February 09, 1727, probably in King and Queen County, Virginia. His parents were Richard Gaines and Catherine Madison.

Francis likely married Betty UNKNOWN in 1743.

He married later Dorothy Boswell (~1731-~1786), a widow, at St. Mark's Parish, Orange County, Virginia in 1750. They had at least 7 children: Note, she is most likely also Dorothy Broaddus with one name being from her first marriage.

The administrator of the estate of his father Richard Gaines of Culpeper County, Virginia. Francis Gaines died in St. Marks Parish, Culpeper County, Virginia, where his Will was dated September 26, 1775, proved July 15, 1776, Will Book B, page 16.

In the Will of Francis Gaines, he bequeathed "all my estate both real and personal to my loving wife Dorothy Gaines. The children named in his will were son James and the five daughters (Lucy, Sarah, Elizabeth [Betty], Dorothy and Susannah).

Francis Gaines died in St. Marks Parish, Culpepper County, Virginia, where his Will was dated September 26,1775, proved July 15, 1776, Will Book B, page 16. Apparently he was married twice, name of first wife unknown, second wife was Dorothy Boswell, a widow.

Gaines-2027 and Gaines-76 appear to represent the same person because: Francis Gaines wrote his will on 6 Sep 1775. It was proved in Culpeper Co., VA, on 15 Jul 1776. The will names son James and daughters Lucy, Sally, Betty, Dorothy, and Susannah. Francis' wife, Dorothy, wrote her will on 24 Apr 1786. It was proved on 19 Jun 1786, Culpeper Co., VA. It named daughters Doratha Gaines, Susannah Carter, Anne Martin, Elizabeth Yates, and son James Gaines.

Gaines-715 and Gaines-76 appear to represent the same person because: same/similar dates, wives named Dorothy are probably the same person, just alternate spelling of name
