Henry was the son of Richard Gaines and Catherine Madison. He was married to Mariah (Stepp) Woods.
Among the earliest settlers in Laurens Co., SC were the Clardys, Smiths, Kings and Henry Gaines family who settled about the 1790s.[1]
After the War Rev. Henry Gaines (he was not in the war) and family moved from Virginia to western Laurens Co., SC. Several of his sons purchased land along the Augusta-Greenville Stage Couch Road, now known as Indian Mound Road. Henry died in 1796 due to injuries working on the Knights Bridge. He was buried on the Gaines property a short distance from the Stage Coach Road. In Sept. 1801 Richard Gaines (son of Henry) sold 90 acres of his property to James Clardy, many people continued to bury their dead in the Gaines Family Cemetery, it later became known as the Gaines-Clardy or Clardy Cem.,but Originally on Gaines property.
The old Gaines-Clardy family cemetery is located between the residence of Benjamin L. and Mary Martin residence and the Christian Hope Church. In Oct. 1993 the old cemetery was read and said to contain about 24 sunken graves marked by field stones or no makers at all. One standing memorial stone was for Henry Gaines....
This is a replacement stone done in 1918 by the Gaines family. The cemetery is on the property of Don Jackson, who bought it from the Martin's. The cemetery had about 25 graves in it but no stones remain except the ones replaced in 1918.
TOMBSTONE: Gaines Cemetery, family burying ground (deserted) on farm now known as Lewis Martin or James Martin place, Sullivan Twp, Near Ware shoals, Laurens, SC.
Close to and north of Christian Hope Church, it is on the northeast side of the paved road, which goes in front of the church.
On one large monument is written:
"Henry Gaines 1731 - 1796 - Married Miss Mariah Woods - carpenter by trade - got hurt while working on - Johnie Nights Bridge on - Saluda River, SC - and died from effects of wounds - He was the father of Sargent Richard Gaines the Revolutionary Soldier. #8064740"
This Henry Gaines did NOT serve in the Rev. War,a different Henry Gaines did.. He married a Catherine "Katy"
Youngest son of Richard Gaines(6). Henry was married three times. Williams is the maiden name of wife number two, but her first name is not known. Name of wife number three is totally unknown. This wife had three children and had been previously married. Her son Robert, was known as Uncle Bobbie or Deacon Robert. He was born in 1770. She had two children with Henry, Caty/Catey and James. James was killed at age 21 by a horse.
