DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Margaret by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Margaret:
Gaines-1300 and Gaines-1296 appear to represent the same person because: dates and places are different, but names of children are very similar, no sources to help with dates on children
Does anyone have any primary documentation, such as a marriage record, that Margaret Pryor's maiden name was Gaines. In DAR database there appears to be no documentation that Gaines was her maiden name.
Father's will names daughter Margaret Gaines in 1726. He died prior to her marriage to John Pryor.
In order to apply for DAR, one is supposed to supply the documentation in order to be admitted. IF there is documentation, either in a bible or other record, it will be in the DAR library in Washington, DC. They have not digitized all the supporting documents, so while you may see the listing for DAR membership online, the documents supporting are not there.
I don't have a copy of Green Pryor's bible (someone does, I'm sure) so do not know if further information would have been recorded there either.
Carolyn, thanks for replying (sorry I am a bit late answering).
The DAR database has Margaret Pryor's maiden name of 'Gaines' red-lined. If you can go into the DAR
database, you can pull up Margaret Pryor/Prior and see the pedigree of women who have
either gained membership to DAR through Margaret Pryor or have an approved
supplemental on Margaret Pryor. Each person's use of 'Gaines' as Margaret's
maiden name has red area at top of pedigree which means there is something wrong
in the application - click on 'why' and explanation comes up. In this instance, it is that no one has used primary documentation
to show that Margaret Pryor's maiden name was 'Gaines.
I wish it were so as I descend from Margaret (unknown) Pryor through her daughter Mildred
who married David Womack I.
I can use Margaret for a supplemental but will not insert 'Gaines' as her maiden name. This supplemental application is on my to-do list as is a supplemental application for her son-in-law David Womack, my 5th great-grandfather who was a Patroller in the Nash District of NC during the American Revolutionary War.
I know you are related some way through either the Womack line or through one of the children of John Pryor and Margaret.
Find it interesting that Mildred's sister Leah Pryor Perkins was the 2nd great-grandmother (or maybe it's the 3rd) of J.E.B. Stuart.
Would love to know how we are related - very distant cousins I am sure. I have a friend who is able to go into pretty much anything having to do with research at the DAR Library. I plan to ask her if there is Bible record from Green Pryor's family. Of course, will have to be a Bible that is
contemporaneous to timeframe her son Green was living. Possible the timeframe might stretch out to a grandchild's lifetime.
I'll let you know if my friend finds anything. Thx again. Linda Alcott Maples
I descend from two of their children: Green Pryor ( I have a different dob in my files) married to Susannah Perkins and had Mary Elizabeth Green Pryor on my maternal side; and Elizabeth Ann Pryor married to Mathews Flournoy and had Robert Watkins Flournoy on my paternal side. Turns out my parents are 6 cousins. Who knew??? So you and I are probably 5th cousins somewhere...
So, are you thinking that George Gaines linked here is not her father? Even though he mentions a Margaret in his will?
Just strange that not one DAR paper has primary documentation stating that Margaret Pryor's maiden name was Gaines.
But then, applicants piggy-back on others so that might be the reason - not doing any in depth research to prove her
maiden name was Gaines.
Were Margaret and John H. Pryor married in same county where George Gaines lived before his death? I noticed he died in 1726 which was same year Margaret and John were married.
Not ever having read George Gaines' will, I have no idea what his daughter Margaret and son Bernard inherited. If land was inherited by Margaret, then she probably would have sold before migrating to NC with her husband John Pryor. The VA land records
might tell us something - though with descendants like you, I am sure that has been checked out thoroughly.
You mentioned someone in the Green Pryor family having a Bible record. I'll write myself a note to see if I can access the Bible records at DAR.
Might have to send for a copy of one of the applications which go through Green Pryor to his mother Margaret to see if a Bible record was used as proof connecting Margaret Pryor to applicant.
