Biography

Cecily's maiden name is unclear. Although a family member read the name on early records as Gohen, one source [1] lists the name as Gallon. Another source, a marriage record for John and Cecily's second son, Patrick, lists his mother's name as C. Gallahan.[2]

Early Life

Cecily was born in Ireland. The marriage record for her second son Patrick indicates he was born in County Donegal. Presumably, John and Cecily were married in Donegal about 1827 and their eldest three children were born there. Based on the births of their children, the family immigrated to Simcoe County, Ontario about 1835 before moving to Wellington County after it was opened to settlement in around 1843. The 1851 Ontario Census (which was actually conducted in January 1852) shows a family consisting of John age, 50, Cecily, 45, Joseph Manus, 23, Patrick 21, Rose, 19, Catherine 14, James 11, John 9, and Bernard, 7.[3] (Ages were to be listed according to each person's NEXT birthday.)

In 1861[4], the family was living in a two-story log house, including their oldest son Manus and his wife Catherine.

Death

Family sources indicate Cecily died in 1865 at age 59.[5] She is buried in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Macton, Peel Township, Ontario, though not found on the Ontario Genealogical Society transcription of burials in that cemetery.

Research Notes

There were members of the Gallaghan family living in Templecarne parish which was primarily in County Donegal in 1828.[6]
