Biography

Joan (Gallop) Joy immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Parentage; Date and Place of Birth

Joan, the daughter of John Gallop and Christobel (Bruschett) Gallop, was baptized on 20 September 1618 at Bridport, Dorset, England.[1][2][3]

Immigration to New England

Joan immigrated to New England with her mother and siblings sometime between July 1632 and June 1634. A letter by John Winthrop dated 4 July 1632 refers to John Gallop's wife and children having remained in England,[4] while on 22 June 1634 Joan's mother, Christovall, was admitted to the church of Boston.[5] According to The Joy Genealogy, "[it] is believed [that John Gallop's] family came in the Griffin, Sept. 1633, which also brough two Puritan devines, John Cotton and Thomas Hooker, and which Gallop himself piloted to her anchorage."[6] However, while possible, no there seems to be no direct evidence supporting any of the assertions in that statement.

Marriage

Joan married Thomas Joy. Their marriage is established by the wills of Joan's parents. The 1649 will of her father, John Gallop, contains bequests to "my daughter Joane" and "John Joy, my daughter's sonne",[7][6] while the 1655 will of Joan's mother, Christabel Gallop contains a bequest to "my daughter Joan Joy".[8][6]

No record of their marriage has been found. Secondary sources state that Joan and Thomas were married in,[6] about[1][9] or by[3] 1637. However, based on the February 1639/40 date of birth of their first child,[10] a marriage date in 1638 seems most likely.

Since both Joan's family and Thomas Joy are believed to have been residents of Boston at the time of their marriage, they were no doubt married there.

Children

Joan and Thomas had the folloiwng children:

  1. Samuel, b. 26 February 1639/40 in Boston,[10]
  2. John, b. 10 October 1641 in Boston[11]
