Biography

Esther Gallup (also seen as Ester Gallop), daughter and only child of John and Charity (Hall) Gallop[1], was born in Taunton, Plymouth Colony, British America on 21 July 1653.[2]

Esther's father died by 1656, as her mother married in that year, second, Richard Burt, as his first wife.[3][4] Their 1656 marriage year is estimated from the birth of their first child Abel on 5 December 1657.[5]

Esther married Henry Hodges on 17 December 1674, in Taunton.[6][7][8]. They had children, all born in Taunton:[7]

  1. Mary (3 Feb 1675/6), married James Keith
  2. Esther (17 Feb 1677/8), married Ichabod Southworth
  3. William (18 Mar 1679/80), married Susannah Gilbert
  4. Charity (5 Apr 1682), married Elkanah Leonard, then Jabez Perkins
  5. John (ca 1684), married Hannah Morton
  6. Henry (ca 1685 or 1686), married Sarah Leonard
  7. Joseph (ca 1688 or 1689), married Beth williams, then Mary (Toogood) (Kent) Barney
  8. Benjamin (ca 1691), married Abiah Deane, then Sarah (Lane) Silley
  9. Ephraim (ca 1693), married Bethia Danforth
  10. Elizabeth (ca 1695), married (probably) Samuel Shaw, then twice more

Henry Hodges died in Taunton on 30 September 1717.[9] Esther is mentioned in his undated will, probated on 7 November 1717.[10]

Esther probably died in Taunton, at some unknown date after Henry's death. At age about 64 in 1717, she may have gone to live with one of her children.

Research Notes

Gallup[8] states Esther's birth was in New London, Connecticut Colony on 24 March 1653. However, Hodges[7] and Reed[2] state her birth was in Taunton, Plymouth Colony, 21 July 1653. Hodges makes his point thusly: "He [Esther's father, John Gallup] went to New London, Conn., apparently in 1650 or 1651, but probably did not take his family there for several years, as his daughter Ester's birth is recorded at Taunton among the children of Richard Burt." and from Reed,[2] "The names of the children of Richard Burt: Abil, borne 5 Dec., 1657. Ester Gollup, dr. of John Gollup, borne 21 July, 1653. Mary Burt, dr. of Richard . . . ". This issue was based on the misidentification of Esther's father as the John Gallop who married Hannah Lake.

A daughter Abigail had been listed as a child of Esther and Henry, but the Hodges book does not mention her. She supposedly married, first, Elkanah Tisdale. No such name appears in the Hodges book. A search on AmericanAncestors finds no such marriage. FamilySearch has an undated implied marriage record for an Abigail Hodge and Elkanah Tisdale in Lebanon, Connecticut. There seems to be a conflation of two Abigail Hodges there. There are no credible sources on her profile, so she has been disconnected as a child of Esther and Henry.

The NEHGS Register (V. 54, pp 89-91) makes a case that the John Gallop of Taunton was NOT the same as Capt. John Gallop of New Haven (who was son of John Gallop of Boston and husband of Hannah Lake), both Johns active at the same time, one in New Haven, and the other (Esther's father) in Taunton.
