Biography

Marie Gareau was born about 1677 in Port-Royal, Acadie, Nouvelle-France, daughter of Dominique Gareau (1626–bef. 1699) and Marie Gaudet (abt. 1626–1710).[1]

Marie was first noted in the census of 1678, with 4 older step-siblings.[2]

In 1686, at Port Royal, Elarie [recte Marie] Garault [sic], aged 9, was living with her parents, Dominique GARAULT [sic], aged 60, and Marie GODET [sic], and her two stepbrothers: Michel, aged 20, and Antoine, aged 16. Her stepbrothers were the children of her mother and Emanuel [recte Etienne] HEBERT. The family lived on 3 arpents of cultivable land with 4 sheep and 4 hogs.[3]

Marie (20) married Jerome Darois (27) (born in 1670 in Paris, France) about 1698 in Port-Royal.[1] Their known children were:

  1. Isabelle Darois (abt. 1698–1765)
  2. Jean Darois (abt. 1700–1757)
  3. Etienne Darois (abt. 1703–abt. 1763)
  4. Marie Josephte Darois (1709–1753)
  5. Joseph Darois (1711– )
  6. Anne Darois (abt. 1717–aft. 1763)
  7. Magdeleine Darois (1719–abt. 1767)

Marie died about 1755 in Colony of Virginia, aged 77.[4]

Giraud-328 and Gareau-1 appear to represent the same person because: This merge started with the daughter's baptism. The parents names on the transcription were misspelled. This mothers name was quite mangled. Other sources confirm Gareau as correct.
