George or Cuthbert Gardiner, father of George Gardiner, Dean of Norwhich.
College registry entries for his sons George, DD. & German, record his given name as either George and/or Cuthbert.[1][2]
Disputed Origins...
Skepticism about George's ancestry has resulted from repeated internet reports claiming his father was Bishop Stephen Gardiner (1483-1555) of Bury St. Edmunds --a very conservative, celibate Catholic priest who therefore clearly had no offspring. There was another Stephen Gardiner (Steven Gardiner, actually) --of Lancashire, not of Bury-- who may have been George's true father.
Confusion arises from the once accepted belief that Bishop Stephen was the son of London skinner William Gardiner and Ellen or Helen Tudor, due to contemporary evidence that William and Helen were the parents of a prominent clergyman (now indicated --most clearly-- to be Thomas Gardiner of Tynemouth). It is now proved, from Bishop Stephen's own will, that his father was cloth merchant John Gardiner of Bury, possibly a brother of William Gardiner, hence the confusion between them, leaving the remaining Stephen (Steven Gardiner of Lancashire) as possibly another son of William Gardiner and Helen Tudor, inasmuch as the same coat of arms held by Thomas Gardiner, Prior of Tynemouth, Northumberland, was also held by George Gardiner's son, Rev George Gardiner.

(Cuthbert was a popular name, even at this date in Northumb., so it wouldn't be surprising to see it in a Berwick family)
