Biography

1776 Project
Private Eben Gardner served with Lincoln County Militia, Massachusetts Militia during the American Revolution.

Ebenezer Gardner was baptized at Salem, Massachusetts, 4 Sep 1737, the son of Eunice Waters and Thomas Gardner of Salem, Massachusetts. [1] [2][3][4][5]

in 1763, he was granted land in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. [2][6]

He married in 1769 to Damaris Merrill (bapt: 6 Sep 1747) of Haverhill, Massachusetts [2] and their children included Susanna, Eunice, Hannah, Ebenezer, Samuel, Thomas, John and William. [2]

During the American Revolutionary War, he was a Private in the Massachusetts Militia under Col. Foster:

GARDNER, Eben (also given Ebenezer). Private, Capt. Stephen Smith's co., Col. Benjamin Foster's regt.; service between Dec. 4, 1778, and Jan. 4, 1779, 2 days, at Machias; also, Lieut. John Scott's detachment, 6th Lincoln Co. regt.; service between Aug. 31, 1779, and Nov. 20, 1779, 14 days, at Machias; roll endorsed "service at Penobscot."[7][8]

Ebenezer GARDINER (or Gardner or Garner) moved from Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, to the Saint John River area of New Brunswick. [9]

Lived in that part of Machias, later set off as Machiasport. [10]

He died on 21 Nov 1832, aged 97 years, 3 months, and was buried in the Stuart-Gardner Cemetery in Machiasport. [11] [12] [13] [14]

Ebenezer Gardner was born in that part of Salem that is now West Peabody. A potter by trade, he received a grant of land at Auk-paque, Cumberland, NS, prior to the Rev War. This was land from which the Acadians had been expelled. Since he sided with the Americans and went to Boston to speak for their cause, when the Rev War broke out he came back to Maine and settled on the west bank of the Machias River. He was a private in Capt. Stephen Smith's company, Col. Benjamin Foster's regiment, and also in Lt. John Scott's detachment, 6th Lincoln Co Regt. For his patriotic services, he received in 1785 a grant of 1,000 acres near Bangor, but he preferred to remain at Machias [Maine Families in 1790, Vol. 5, p. 131].

Here I am, a year later, still trying to connect Samuel Gardner to his parents, Ebenezer Gardner and Damaris Merrill. Please see the profile for Samuel Gardner for additional sources for the parentage of this son, in addition the ones cited previously, below. If you prefer, you can add me to the trusted list, and I will be happy to perform the edits myself.

I am trying to connect Samuel Gardner, son of Ebenezer Gardner and Damaris Merrill, and husband of Abigail Berry, according to "Maine Families in 1790", Vol. 5, p. 132 and Vol. 6, p. 26.

Just want to note that he is attached to the wrong father. His father should be Thomas Gardner-10654
