James Gardner and his wife, Judith, moved to Madison, Kentucky about 1808, when they bought land from Thomas Kennedy and his wife, Edney on Silver Creek, a transaction witnessed by his son-in-law, John Shirley, and his son, George R. Gardner.[1] On 16 Dec 1816, James Gardner and his wife, Judith, gave over this land to their son, George R. Gardner in exchange for his promise to maintain them for the rest of their natural lives.[2] The evidence of George taking in his parents can be seen in the 1820 US Census, where George is enumerated as head of household with an older man and woman in his household.[3] In 1826, George R. Gardner sold the land on Silver Creek with his wife, Letty, and his father, James as cosigners to his neighbor, Cyrus T Trevis.[4] The lack of Judith's signature on the deed indicates that she had passed away by this point. George selling the land on Silver Creek indicates that the family was moving, and in 1830, George is found in Gallatin, Kentucky [5] with an elderly man between the ages of 90-99 in his household, indicating that James was still alive and living with his son. This is the last source of James to indicate that he was alive.
