Linnie, daughter of Theodore and Julia (Cooper) Gardner, was born in Illinois in 1897. She was the sister of Ina, Earl, Lucy J., Paul, and Albert. Her father was a farmer in Macon County, Illinois. Linnie married Chester Riley in Maroa, Illinois, in 1915, when she was 18 years old. Chester was an employee of A. E. Staley Company in Decatur, Illinois, during the early years of their marriage. Later he worked at Purina in Maroa. Their children were Leon, Maxine, Myrle, Ronald, Richard, Chester, Jr., and Jan. Linnie and Chester are buried in Maroa Township Cemetery, Maroa.
