Biography

harles W. Gardner was born in May 1846 in Washtenaw County, MI, the fifth of six children born to Elizabeth Bunting and Henry Gardner.

He taught at Reeves School in Pinckney for a time, then graduated from the University of Michigan with an M.D. degree. He was known for being an immaculate dresser.

He married Sarah Eleanor "Nell" Harris on 9 April 1880 by the Catholic bishop, Caspar Borgess, in Detroit.

They had a daughter, Ellen E. "Nellie" Gardner on February 19, 1881, and her mother died the next day.

Charles never remarried.

He practiced in Exeter Twp., Monroe County, for many years. He ended his career in Bellaire where he died on 26 Jan 1899 (contrary to the date on his tombstone).

Nellie was raised by her aunt and uncle, Margaret (Gardner) and Damascus "Mack" Monks.
