Biography

Note: It is unclear if Eliza's birth surname was Gardner. The record of her marriage to Gilbert Mark states her surname as 'Bumgardner.' Gilbert Mark's obituary states her surname at the time of her marriage as 'Bonhardner.' Find A Grave memorial state 'Bumgardner' without source citation. A notice in The Ringgold Record (Mt. Ayr, Iowa) published 10 January 1889 (p. 4, col. 6) by Gilbert Mark disclaiming responsiblity for the contracts of his 'step son R.L. Bomgardner' suggests that Bomgardner was Eliza's married surname from her first marriage. Further research required.
