Biography

Martha was the daughter of Ewell and Martha Barnhart Gardner. She married Emanuel James Hickam, the son of George & Frankey Dixon Hickam. They were the parents of George, Ewell, Reuben and Squire Hickam. Emanuel died of typhoid fever while serving as a Pvt in Co F of the 14th Ky Vol Inf., in 1863.

She married Thomas Blair on September 14, 1868 in Scott County, Virginia. He was the son of John & Lucy Ann Blair, the widower of Margaret Morgan Blair and the father of Mary Ruth and Eliza Ann Blair.

The couple worked together to raise their blended family. In addition, Thomas and Martha were the parents of Cecily Josephine and James Henry Blair. Mr. Blair, and their daughter, Cecily, both passed away in 1871.

After she was widowed, Martha remained a mother to her stepdaughters and devoted herself to raising them and her sons, Ewell, Squire, and James, to adulthood. When the children had grown up, she accepted an invitation to live in the home of her son, Squire Hickam, and, later, maintained her own household. Mrs. Blair passed away, in 1927, after a long and admirable life.

•Pension Records: Martha, drew a Widow's Pension based on her husband's military service [cert 161.782]. When she married Thomas Blair, E. Derting was appointed as guardian to oversee pension payments made to her minor children [cert 161.783]. After Martha's second husband, Thomas, passed away, she refiled for pension benefits on September 16, 1901 [cert 161.782]. That document appears in the Remarried Widows Pension Applications section of military records.
