WARREN, O., JulY 3.-The Republicans of the Twenty-fourth and Twenty-sixth joint district met today and chose two candidates for the State Senate. They are Hon. Friend Whittlesey, of Ravenna, who was renominated by acclamation, and James R. Garfield, of Mentor. Garfield had one opponent, Hon. E. J. Clapp, of Thompson, Geauga county, whom he defeated by a vote of 106 to 90.
James R. Garfield is the second son of ex-President Gartield. The convention indorsed the State Republican platform and ticket chosen at Zanesville, William McKinley for President, and Joseph B. Foraker United State Senator.

Please add this information Following his father's death on September 19, 1881, he studied at Williams College, graduating in 1885, before moving on to Columbia Law School where he studied law and earned his J.D. in 1888. That same year, he was admitted to the Ohio bar and established the Cleveland, Ohio-based law firm of Garfield and Garfield, with his brother Harry Augustus Garfield. From 1890 until her death in 1930, he was married to Helen Newell. Their grandson, Newell Garfield, later married Jane Harrison Walker, a granddaughter of President Benjamin Harrison and Harrison's second wife Mary Dimmick Harrison as well as the great-grandniece of James G. Blaine.
