Biography

Drapeau identifiant les profils du Canada, Nouvelle-France
Pierre (Garnier) Grenier a vécu
au Canada, Nouvelle-France.

He was the son of Isaac Joseph Garnier and Marie Houde. Date of birth estimated, no baptism survives for him.

Pierre Grenier married Marie Anne Matte before 1730, marriage record cannot be found.

Children of the marriage:

  1. +Marie Anne Grenier, b & bapt 7 Feb 1730 Lotbinière; godmother Marie Angélique femme du bonhomme Grenier[1]; Marie Anne Grinier married Joseph Amelle (Hamel) 5 Feb 1753 Lotbinière; her father deceased; listed present were Marie Anne Matte widow of Pierre Grinier her mother, Pierre Grinier her brother, Gervais Grinier her uncle.[2]
  2. Pierre Joseph Grenier, b & bapt. 16 Oct 1731 Lotbinière; godfather Joseph Grenier [3]; possibly Joseph Grinier married Marie Judith Augé 10 Jun 1771 Lotbinière; cited present Pierre & François Grinier brothers of the groom[4]; Note there are 2 possible men for this marriage, either Pierre Joseph or another Joseph, Marie Amable's marriage cites Joseph and Pierre as both present, so 2 brothers, which is which not clear.

  7. Jean Baptiste Grenier, b & bapt 2 May 1741 Lotbinière[9]; buried same day.

Death

No funeral record has been found for Pierre, Lotbinière records for the era are only partial. He is listed as deceased on the marriages of his children, the first one dated 5 February 1753.[2] Most likely he would have died in Lotbinière, but this is not proven.

Notes

Parentage sort-out

Jetté lists Isaac Joseph Garnier as having remarried by contract of 3 October 1717 (Laneuville) with Marie Angélique Matte, who would be the godmother of Marie Anne Grenier listed above.[10] He does not list a son named Pierre for Isaac Joseph and his wife Marie Houde. He lists Pierre married with Marie Anne Matte in 1729 as son of Claude Garnier and Marie Madeleine Coquin, born and baptised 17 Jan 1710 in Neuville[10] He gives the further precision on Pierre's listing that this is according to T. (Tanguay) (pg 469) and that Pierre's marriage would have been done around 1728 in Cap-Santé.

Tanguay for his part lists the name Garnier under Grenier (Vol 4).[11] He has no son named Pierre for Isaac Joseph (pg 363), and lists Pierre under Claude Grenier's second marriage with Marie Madeleine Coquin (dite Latourelle) (pg 364). Doesn't have all the children found for Pierre (pg 366) (Jetté stops in 1730)

Joseph Isaac has a son named Gervais, born in 1689. Gervais Grinier is present at the marriage of Marie Anne in 1753, cited her uncle[2]. Claude has no son named Gervais. QED, Pierre was son of Joseph Isaac, not of Claude.
