James Smith Garoutte was the second son of Michael and Sophia (Smith) Garoutte. He was born in NJ 22 July 1792, died 30 November 1876, buried in the Garoutte Cemetery in Greene County, MO. The family lived at Tuckahoe and Pleasant Mills, NJ, moving to Duck Creek, Washington County, Ohio, about 1820. Her little children were tenderly cared for by the women of a camp of friendly Indians located nearby until Spring. Then James Smith Garoutte took them back to his relatives in Ohio. From there in 1837 he and his family moved to Greene County, MO, and settled about 20 miles west of Springfield in Pond Creek Township. Mr. Garoutte owned a large farm and gave the land for the Garoutte Cemetery, about half a mile south of his home.
