Biography

Jacob Gerrits was baptized on 14 October 1646 at the New Amsterdam Dutch Reformed Church, the son of Gerrit Jansen van Oldenburg.[1]

He appears in later records as Gerritse/Gerritsen/Garrison etc., as well as de Muffe and de haes/Hass/Hause.[2]

Jacob married around 1673 Christina (a.k.a. Christian/Styntie) Cresson, daughter of of Pierre and Rachel Cresson and widow of Jean Letelier. Christina and Jean had married on 26 April 1665, and Jean died 4 September 1671 at New Utrecht.[2]

Jacob Gerrits along with Zegar Gerritse (not related) bought 72 morgens of land south of the Fresh Kill during the Dutch re-occupation. When the the English re-took the area in 1674 the land purchases made during the re-occupation were considered null and void. But the land that he had purchased ended up being purchased by his father in law (Pierre Cresson) in 1680. Which passed down to Jacob when Pierre died. A map of the colonial land patents on Staten Island shows where Jacob's father in law Pierre and brother in law Josiah purchased land. The map also shows the land of Jacob's brother John Gerrits de Mof. The map was created using an old 1712 map created by Frederick Skene. Please see the website Rabbits Row for more information about this family [3]

On 7 January 1708/9, Garret, Peter, John, and Jacob Garrison released to their mother Christian all rights or claims to the estate of their father.[4]

  • Paternal relationship is confirmed through Y-chromosome DNA testing. Tracy Garrison and James Garrison match on 65 out of 67 markers (see YSearch IDs 6YRTM and SQ3ZZ) thereby confirming their direct paternal lines back to their MRCA Jacob Garrison (Gerritsen De Haes). Furthermore Each of these descendants of Jacob Gerritsen have taken the Big Y DNA test at FTDNA which confirmed their Haplogroup as being R-YP3896 as are the other members of the Gerrit Jansen van Oldenburg subgroup of the Garrison DNA Project that have had advanced SNP testing.

Garrison-1963 and Garrison-1262 appear to represent the same person because: These seem to be the same Garrison.
