In 1860, he lived with his mother and sister in his maternal grandparent's home in Bath. In the 1870 census, he and Sarah lived with James Pesterfield (their mother's second husband) in Bath.

"HR Garrison the efficient secretary and treasurer of the VittMayes Manufacturing Company of Warrensburg Missouri was born in Schell City Missouri in 1886. He is a son of JW and Florence Davis Garrison. JW Garrison is a native of Illinois. He came to Missouri about thirty eight years ago and to Johnson county in 1892. Mr Garrison was engaged for several years in conducting the old St Cloud Hotel in Warrensburg. At the time of this writing in 1917 JW Garrison is in southeastern Oklahoma traveling for the VittMayes Manufacturing Company. Florence Davis Garrison is a daughter of Robert Davis a native of Pennsylvania who settled in Schell City several years after the Civil War. Mr Davis was a veteran of the Confederacy. To JW and Florence Davis Garrison have been born the following children Mabel who is the wife of HP Bryant of Marshall Missouri and HR the subject of this review." - quoted from Cockrell, E (1918)
He applied for a dram shop license in 1896 and was the proprietor of the St Cloud Hotel Bar in Warrensburg.
In 1900, he and his wife and children rented a home on 201 East Culton Street in Warrensburg, Missouri. In the 1900 census, his occupation in listed as "saloon keeper".
In 1902, he was arrested, accused of improperly trying to influence jury selection. His defense was that he did not know it was illegal to suggest a juror. It does not appear he was convicted.
In June 1923, he became seriously ill and passed away 8 days later. The cause of death was recorded as apoplexy
His grave marker lists his year of birth as 1861 and his death certificate lists it as 1860. Family records list it as 1859 and he is listed as being 1 in the 1860 census.
