Biography

Lemuel Garrison, Sr

Origin

He was a descendant of Gerrit Jansen Van Oldenburg, however, we do not know who Lemuels father was, but Y DNA and other supporting documents/evidence has confirmed this to be true. He was born in New Jersey. Gerrit emigrated with the Dutch in early 1600's. He shows up in New Amserdam (modern day New York) in about 1638/9. He died in 1661. He was originally from Oldenburg, Germany. (Per email from Rob Garrison)

Family

Lemuel married in 1780 in New jersey to Mary (Parsons?), b 1760.They were said to have had at least nine children. Whether Parsons was their son is not proven, but the circumstantial evidence is convincing. If wife Mary was a Parsons, then naming conventions would dictate the first born carry her name. Benjamin Parsons (b 1740) named two daughters in his will, "Prudy Doughty and Mary Garritson."[1] Mary may have been his daughter. However, Lemuel Sr, did not mention Parsons in his will; he named five of his children, but not Parsons.

New Jersey

Lemuel and Mary were married in New Jersey, and they continued there for some years. In 1785, he was still on the Gloucester County tax roll, and Enoch Shaw was apprenticed to Lemuel Garrison in 1785.[2]

Ohio

Probably between 1785 and 1810, Lemuel Sr. removed to Ohio.[1] His son Lemuel Jr. is said to have gone to Ohio about 1807, first to Warren County then soon to Clinton County, Lemuel Sr. probably followed with other family members. The Doughtys also removed to Ohio, as did several Gloucester County families.[1]

Revolutionary War Service

Lemuel was a private in the Gloucester County Militia, New Jersey, duty beginning November 7, 1775 and ending on November 7, 1777.[3]

Death and Legacy

Lemuel died July 10, 1818 at Clinton County, Ohio, and he was living there when he made his will, as it was filed in Clinton County.[1] The will names five children, but son Parsons is missing.[1] Wife Mary died in about 1820 at Clinton County, Ohio.[1] A newer headstone commemorates Lemuel's grave in the Garrison Cemetery, Blanchester, Clinton County, Ohio.[3]
